I'd been under the impression that the pressure to conform to narrative was coming from the editors, but it seems they've enlisted an army of culture distorters to enforce their views.

Presumably most of the authors having their work mangled in this fashion are willing participants. At this point, the only people opposing the narrative are rightists, and rightists aren't being published by the major publishing houses.
