The problem with Star Trek-style tech, the transporter in particular, is it solves too many problems for dramatic purposes. E.g., it had to be broken in one movie to explain a rescue mission. Also, why couldn’t Kirk materialize dozens of copies of himself to outnumber an enemy?

This is much easier than everybody seems to think it is. Having your atoms disassociated is not a survivable event. The you that is you dies when it is torn apart by the transporter beam.

I suppose I would start with asking what my answer would be to the hypothetical before the event—what does a transporter normally do (in my understanding) and is this outcome consistent with that understanding?
