The problem I've seen, is that as implemented, most of Common Core doesn't provide alternatives or understanding. It's just a rote and mindless as any prior instruction. It's just replacing one method with another.

/2 For example, the division method is actually as shorter method than long division. You educated ballpark guess the solution then solve from there. But you need the multiplication foundational knowledge (e.g. times tables) or it's a bigger mess than straight long division.

The inefficiency of this technique makes my eye twitch. I get the argument surrounding numeracy/literacy. And for all I know, these methods might work on normies. I don't know! Convince me! I do know that even my younger self would've been irritated by the waste of time.

It's not incredibly clear to me after seeing common core up close that it's any better or worse than memorizing the times tables and then applying that to the method on the right. It's certainly more complicated.

I'd be more impressed if I didn't run into so many millennials who think I'm some sort of savant for knowing within a penny or two what the bill will be on a dozen grocery items. It's the most basic addition with a multiplication at the end if there are any taxable items.
