I'm curious about birth year effect here - women born in 1940 prob smoke more than those born in 1980 (and will show up in "post birth" cohort)

Women in 1940 cohort in gen prob smoked more, but Hagen notion is that women during repro years (fertile yrs) tend to avoid toxins, including tobacco (as well as other drugs). (Kids, too, seem to avoid toxins - like thru disliking bitter tastes, etc.) Developing brain&/or fetus

yep. I definitely understand the thesis. I'm just saying that you have to be careful to look at cohort effects or else they swamp the actual effect you're trying to investigate.
