Only a very few people take the time for cost/benefit analysis in these situations, allowing instead for the “feels” they get from doing it to make it seem like it isn’t a total waste of time and effort.

Exactly. It's the same as donating hair. Complete virtue-signalling waste of time, when the donation is just going to end up being discarded.

Oh yeah, with the hiding... my mom still religiously recycles everything, but it is clear to me that they have us put it in garbage bags, cuz the city just chucks it. It's not even worth their time. Also saw an art. that plastic can only be recycled 20-30% anyway, so... :shrug:

"Handing over the empty inhaler when you collect a full one" seems if anything like less effort than separately remembering to throw the empty one away. Similarly, I give away nearly empty lighters to people without one because it's stimulus/response rather than remembering.
