The problems and themes are similar. Being stranded, lack of resources, minimal support, exploration/foreign cultures, etc.

Maroonings on inhospitable planets are a very common feature, and more terrifying than their historical forebears. Just a tad more difficult to deal with than constructing a raft from flotsam and throwing oneself on the mercy of the ocean.

I think it's because space is so different and so alien that we need to fit it into a familiar, understandable framework. Thus, Space Is An Ocean. Without water. Or wind. Or cardinal directions.
