The proper answer can't be derived from the question alone. You have to know that there are certain methods the teacher will accept, and equally valid-in-principle methods she won't. It's not about math – it's about learning the teacher's password.

And in corrupting math – where proofs are either sound or unsound, answers either right or wrong – with guessing the teacher's password, the lesson conveyed is to read the minds of authorities and tell them what they want to hear – nothing less, nothing more.

Twofold question - is the estimate right y/n? yes Why? "Because it's the exact answer" is a complete proof of why Any explanation of what that's "wrong" involves explaining that actual math doesn't apply in "math" class and calling it math class is a lie
-
To get deeper you then have to explain why his method and answer were correct as an answer to a mathematical question but what was being asked wasn't a mathematical question which is a very complex subject to explain to kids - some adults in this thread don't even understand it

I think to test estimation methods, you need a question that's actually non-trivial via calculation saying "answer via estimation" for question you can solve in your head in five seconds, then marking off for correct answer, is cruddy teaching even though estimation is valuable
-
that, or you need to ask the kid what method he used which the teacher did and the kid gave the wrong answer

Probably just as good why I don’t have kids…this stuff drove me bonkers as a kid and would make me ballistic as a kid This is (as they like to say) a “teachable momment ” for the kid to find out why they were marked wrong But Not as the teacher expected if it was my kid…
