I am a little rattled every time I re-realize how many people (even apparently competent, responsible, fully-functional adults) just don’t understand things.

Sometimes this happens when you try to make an abstract point and it plainly just whizzes by them. Today it happened when someone cropped up on the brain cancer forum to ask if s/he can get life insurance *post-diagnosis*

I’ve actually seen this a number of times by now. They aren’t bad people, they know they “should” have life insurance. But

I've recently come up with a theory. High g people think that everything is g loaded , so you meet someone who can dress themselves, make polite chit-chat, pick nice decor for their house, not crap on the carpet, and you think "competent person like me!" >>>

2/ but there are "co processors" in the brain that handle tidiness, socialization, manners, etc. and so these people SEEM to satisfy all the requirements for intelligence, but actually in the "pure rationality" part of the brain (g) there's very little going on.

3/ Take a peek inside reddit /r/legaladvice, or relationships, or whatever. There are all of these putatively real adults who ... just can't seem to think. It's amazing. I've been getting very depressed re this topic recently.

I mean, most things *are* g-loaded right? but at the same time it's proper and good that life doesn't strictly require you to be a genius, and there's a problem to the extent modern life *does* increasingly require this (fucking health insurance, how does it work)

yes, it's good that +0, -1 etc people can dress themselves, participate in social rituals, raise kids, etc. Agreed that modernity requiring so much IQ and conscientiousness is bad. C.f. my rant that it's unfair to expect Shaniqua to remember to show up at court for speed ticket

...and it's far worse when her inability to remember a court date 7 weeks out results in a suspended license, and then her failure to forward her mail means she doesn't even know that, and the upshot is that a -1.5 std dev person is arrested and handcuffed for driving suspended

I want to live in a population pool where everyone can meet this low bar ... but we don't, and the rules should take account of the actual capacities of people. We don't let children vote / drive / get tattoos / etc bc we know their limitations.
