2/ There's costly signalling (an actual edge lord saying "never cower from the mob") and then there's lower cost signalling (someone who never says anything controversial saying the same).

5/ Of course, I just said that you should trust my signalling. I never said that you should trust my advice! If you've got a job you like, a house with a mortgage, or any other liability, you probably SHOULD cower from the mob. They're irrational and scary!

There's also the (implied) realization that for those low-power people it doesn't matter what you do. Stand up for yourself or kowtow, either way you're banned and shamed.

There's also the John the Prophet model, where you say profane truths but also live in the wilderness and eat bugs and have nothing to lose. I think that's where Nirvana is. The state of being, not the band. Maybe also the band.

Sure, but this says only to ignore the mob if you are very powerful. The advice to most everyone else then is to cower.
