The phrase "right to repair" is a political construct. You ALWAYS have the right to (attempt to) repair anything you purchase. What progs are pushing is a confiscation of private property / an imposition - they demand that firms give up trade secrets with zero compensation.https://twitter.com/kaykayclapp/status/1123339532068253696 …

Apple just killed #RightToRepair legislation in California by telling lawmakers that consumers will hurt themselves trying to fix their own iPhones. Give this a RT if you've ever done a DIY-iPhone repair and you didn't blow yourself up in the process. 🔥 https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/wjvdb4/apple-is-telling-lawmakers-people-will-hurt-themselves-if-they-try-to-fix-iphones … pic.twitter.com/wtLN6yHgzb

2/ I have a right, today, to weld a new fuel tank onto my tractor, fill it with biodiesel, wire a tank heater into the battery, do all manner of things. I do not have (and SHOULD not have) a right to compel Kubota to pay an engineer there to document every detail re the engine.

5/ why, exactly, should manufacturers be compelled the the state to engage in a business model where they'll sell you a thing, and then if you !@# it up, they'll fix it for free? if the gov DOES compel them to do it, what price change do you expect ?https://twitter.com/ee_elephant/status/1123995497277030401 …

You may have the right but that's worthless if the phone autobricks when you do, and the manufacturer voids the warranty. Not claiming that any legislation won't go crazily beyond that bc of course it will.

6/ Selling a printer under cost and then selling toner for $99 is a valid business model (and it's good for consumers too!) Why do you object to a business doing something similar with repairs / upgrades?https://twitter.com/Bugs_Meany/status/1123995818632069122 …

...My understanding is its mainly applied to tech companies who impose restrictions on hardware similar to software EULA; its not (afaik) carte blanche to retromod products w/o *any* penalty; instead specifically limits vendors from imposing crazy 'gotcha' rules

7/ I'm getting a lot of pushback on this analysis, but everyone is citing what the PROPONENTS of the legislation say about the proposed legislation. Reading a fawning Wired / BoingBoing article is not a substitute for reading the actual proposed legislation!

8/ I dug into this several years ago and read the proposed legislation. Don't have time to find it again and read it again now - but it's out there. Google it, read it, and then we'll both have the same understanding and can chat more later, perhaps.

9/ Copyright law was created by the Constitution , an artificial kind of property designed to encourage acts of creation. It works. By saying "Deere copyrighted code", you're saying "Deere is allowed to profit from their investment" Yes! This is good!https://twitter.com/AGStover/status/1124007230511120388 …

This isn't the whole store. For instance, John Deere is using copyright law to try to prevent farmers from accessing or modifying software in their equipment. Literally making it illegal to repair, even if you were ok w/hacking away at it w/out help. pic.twitter.com/Gh8qfAOmke

10/ Also, to be clear, I am PRO-IP ancap, and this puts me a bit outside the norms of ancap. (I don't want state enforced IP; I want legal service provider enforced IP ; more on that in novels 3 & 4 , perhaps!) https://twitter.com/helios_unbound/status/1124011509007429633 …

Totally disagree. Copyright law is state-enforced artificial scarcity and rent-seeking, but this isn't even the issue. The issue is that the laws for that purpose are being abused to make it impossible to fix or modify code after the fact.

imo, the better tact would be removing software patents. Manufacturers can still have their investment protected by copyright, but it removes the exclusivity of patents, permitting more competition; tackling the problem Right to Repair folks perceive while avoiding their solution

Copyright works =/= all applications of copyright good. When Deere discontinues support you're then forced to upgrade if it breaks. Which is contrary to what you said at the top of the thread.

Copyright law had a purpose in its original form. It lasted 14 years. Now it's mostly rent seeking. How exactly does still paying royalties to Paul McCartney for Hey Jude encourage creativity?
