2/ I have a right, today, to weld a new fuel tank onto my tractor, fill it with biodiesel, wire a tank heater into the battery, do all manner of things. I do not have (and SHOULD not have) a right to compel Kubota to pay an engineer there to document every detail re the engine.

3/ " This year, bills have been introduced in nineteen different states. If passed, they’ll require manufacturers to provide repair documentation and parts to consumers and independent repair shops."https://twitter.com/Bugs_Meany/status/1123994071532494853 …

5/ why, exactly, should manufacturers be compelled the the state to engage in a business model where they'll sell you a thing, and then if you !@# it up, they'll fix it for free? if the gov DOES compel them to do it, what price change do you expect ?https://twitter.com/ee_elephant/status/1123995497277030401 …

6/ Selling a printer under cost and then selling toner for $99 is a valid business model (and it's good for consumers too!) Why do you object to a business doing something similar with repairs / upgrades?https://twitter.com/Bugs_Meany/status/1123995818632069122 …

7/ I'm getting a lot of pushback on this analysis, but everyone is citing what the PROPONENTS of the legislation say about the proposed legislation. Reading a fawning Wired / BoingBoing article is not a substitute for reading the actual proposed legislation!

8/ I dug into this several years ago and read the proposed legislation. Don't have time to find it again and read it again now - but it's out there. Google it, read it, and then we'll both have the same understanding and can chat more later, perhaps.

9/ Copyright law was created by the Constitution , an artificial kind of property designed to encourage acts of creation. It works. By saying "Deere copyrighted code", you're saying "Deere is allowed to profit from their investment" Yes! This is good!https://twitter.com/AGStover/status/1124007230511120388 …

10/ Also, to be clear, I am PRO-IP ancap, and this puts me a bit outside the norms of ancap. (I don't want state enforced IP; I want legal service provider enforced IP ; more on that in novels 3 & 4 , perhaps!) https://twitter.com/helios_unbound/status/1124011509007429633 …

You may have the right but that's worthless if the phone autobricks when you do, and the manufacturer voids the warranty. Not claiming that any legislation won't go crazily beyond that bc of course it will.
-
The phone autobricks because people will subtly screw up a repair, then go after Apple (in court or media) because "the phone didn't work". Replace the glass, cause a microscopic short in the process, you blame Apple and insist they fix it free. x100,000 users adds up.
