One of the things I love about The Big Lebowksi is that Walter's outrage is 100% performative. He turns it on and off on a dime.

related: we tend to think of Dude as mellow and Walter as out of control and angry, because these are the personas they adopt and dress for ... but if you watch carefully, it's almost EXACTLY the opposite. Dude is worked up much of the time, Walter is a calming influence.

3/ This is excellent writing. Bad writing has flat characters with no affect. Good writing has characters with attributes and traits. Excellent writing shows characters as real people who ARE x but PERFORM y.

4/ Walter is a calm soul who performs outrage. Dude is an easily upset soul who performs calmness. The Big Lebowski is a scared small man who performs importance. The Nihilists are nobodies performing bad-assness. Only Donnie ("true neutral") is himself.

6/ Also, since I'm doing a film (mini) thread, I noticed a nano-trope. How do you should a tough guy being a good friend / sensitive / observant without showing him being a wuss? Have him notice that a STILL LARGE friend or colleague has lost weight.

Replying to @MorlockP @BostonDelendEst
Of course the call is internal; a bird built a nest in the uplink again.
