interesting thread I agree if we change the phrase "hard SF" to "most SF". Hard SF (WORDS MEAN THINGS!) refers to SF that does not contradict any laws of physics as they're known today. FTP, force fields, and psionics do not occur in hard SF / if they occur the SF is not hard.https://twitter.com/MishaBurnett/status/1121124129757904897 …

This is one reason that I'm not sure that my novels count as "hard". Uplifted Dogs certainly are compatible with the laws of physics. A very very complicated piece of software that seems self-aware is also compatible ...but the anti-gravity drive? Well, it's not full on magic

3/ It obeys conservation of energy laws and a few other constraints. On the other hand, it is not compatible with a few things that we think we know about physics. Now, I've got reasons for that, and they'll be explained in 3 & 4 ... but it still is dodgy, and may disqualify

7/ Great literature, but not hard SF. FTL is right out. Psionics / overview of history: again, right out. Force fields? Third strike. Finally, the calories for a worm to push through sand are really really hard to justify. https://twitter.com/SpaceAgeCowboy/status/1121529437756055553 …

8/ On the one hand, I don't think of the Expanse as hard SF ... but on the other, nothing in book 1 is incompatible w physics as we know it (fusion drives, nanotech ... and that's it, right?)https://twitter.com/Zacnaloen/status/1121529321842270209 …

Replying to @MorlockP
The epstein drive works by magic as a super efficient fusion engine that just works, but follows the rules otherwise, and everything else human related. They break physics with the protomolecule for fun tho

how does the protomolecule break physics? I found book 1 so meh I never read more

Builds a stargate, someone somehow doesnt feel acceleration when a asteroid it moves accelerates at 30g. In like book 4 there is a space station the race that made the molecule put in a special pocket of space time. God stuff.
