interesting thread I agree if we change the phrase "hard SF" to "most SF". Hard SF (WORDS MEAN THINGS!) refers to SF that does not contradict any laws of physics as they're known today. FTP, force fields, and psionics do not occur in hard SF / if they occur the SF is not hard.https://twitter.com/MishaBurnett/status/1121124129757904897 …

I have no problem with people who enjoy that game! I might even listen in as they debate. Just not my thing.

genres are better used to describe than to categorize "This has the flavor of space opera." "So it's space opera?" "Well, kinda, but also..."

My impression is that Dune started out relatively hard ("exaggeration of plausible idea"), then once the author realized his premises were disproven by new research, decided he was now writing fantasy anyway so the sky was the limit.

Where do you put Ender's Game in this? It's been a while since I read it, but I think it only breaks the rules in two ways (the ansible and telepathy). His later books drift much further away, but he starts out well with relativistic time, micro-g acrobatics, etc.

Agree that Dune =/= Hard Sci-Fi. There is a conflation going on in some replies/quoted tweets between the relative hardness of Sci-Fi, and the relative goodness of Sci-Fi. Excellent, award-worthy non-hard Sci-Fi is possible, and shitty hard Sci-Fi is also possible.

This always happens with everything. It’s like goodhart’s law, any useful genre terminology will automatically become worthless as people are incentivized to sell their content as that
