I defaulted on several student loans partially because I lost track of them and partially because living alone in Manhattan is expensive. At times, I bought things like fancy drinks and health insurance for my dogs rather than dealing with the loans.

bundle it, sell it to a collection agency for pennies on the dollar they collect what they can, even if it's severely reduced, they often better than break even

source: buddy of mine bought up like 25 grand worth of old outstanding debt for $2500 Ended up collecting roughly five grand iirc, he didn't do it again because he had to threaten grandmothers and such
