But college is sold to young high schoolers as "the next step." The story goes "I went to college, now I am here. Now you." In that sense, the demonstration was already done. Further, the more credentialed a person is, the more likely they report it was worth it.

I despise Mao, but I think it points out a core issue a lot of conservative types miss. In society, the rules we play by are not explicated. They are subject to change without notice or announcement, and you've got to flow with them if you want to accomplish things.
