For upcoming collapse, I'd kind of rather have my house fitted with solar panels, a rain barrel system, and have a salt beef barrel. Good cooperage is difficult to acquire.

I dunno, I've heard it's very hard to make watertight barrels. Much easier to make a barrel that's not watertight, and line the inside.

wood barrels, like wooden boats, leak until they touch water then they leak a bunch until the wood swells but, yes, there were multiple categories of barrel, some only for dry goods. Much looser tolerances, no straw placed in certain gaps as caulking, etc.
