Really? depending on the circumstances/context - location, etc - not necessarily for everyday wear but having on hand seems like a good idea.

That is true, but it's a trivial truth. It's equally true that the chance a gun will save your life - if you're a white man who doesn't do drugs - is equally close to zero. If you're concerned enough to carry a gun, body armor is just as rational.
-
The point is not that people shouldn't carry guns, or should always wear a vest. It's that after the $400 price of a J-frame, everything you spend on an EDC weapon is getting you less marginal return than a vest would. Not about safety. Pure status signaling.

I dont wear it...but it stays in the vehicle with me. Home is relatively safe. Away from it I want my odds of safely getting home afoot over days maxed out. (It isn't a few blocks away...)

I once asked an active duty friend of mine about body armor. He said that in the field, it was a lot of extra bulk on an already heavy load-out, and he regarded it as unlikely to save your life, but highly likely to tire you out quicker - which he regarded as very dangerous.
-
A lot of people don't consider that it's not how you fight at the beginning of the fight. It's how you fight at the end of the fight when you're exhausted. That's why Tai chi is an effective martial art. It doesn't tire you out.

The second advantage of routinely wearing body armor is that you get accustomed to its weight/bulk/awkwardness so those are less of a problem when you need to wear it. Again, though, irrelevant for most people.

Body armor’s utility is situational, based on place & likely threat. Weird fact? Many jurisdictions forbid felons from owning body armor. Argue all day long about whether felons, once time is served, should have all rights restored, but why deprive felons of body armor at all?
