Status signaling. Although lately the medkit issue has taken on a tinge of virtue signaling. "You use THAT tourniquet? Do you want people to DIE?!"

Google says EDC is Electric Daisy Carnival. I’m guessing that’s not what you are talking about? Or is it?

"Every Day Carry." i.e. the collection of useful items and gear you have about your person on an average day. Red tribe likes to compare their respective levels of tactical options/random disaster readiness, with bonus points for how impractical the items are to actually carry.

My one counter: to the extent that it encourages readiness and good carry habits, and allows *honest* critiques and suggestions for people's loadouts, this is actually a good culture to have. To the extent it encourages overcompensation/oneupmanship. Yeah, its signalling.

At first you optimize your EDC because you know you might randomly be called out to show it and be judged, so you generate the habit of gearing up every time you head out. Once that habit is engrained through social forces, it becomes natural and could save you one day.
