I find it odd to call remarks "outrageous". This sounds like a testable hypothesis. Why, post-Enlightenment, would anyone ever choose to take the Dark Age path of being outraged when they can instead gather data and test a hypothesis? Sad. https://twitter.com/georgeeaton/status/1115926643799932929 …

4/ So in three steps we've gone from a legitimate critique of the Chinese totalitarian state ("it shapes the thinking of its citizens"), to getting the quote EXACTLY backwards ("right wingers are racist"). Isn't it ANTI racist to want Chinese citizens to have freedom?

5/ “They’re creating robots out of their own people… each Chinese person is a kind of replica of the next one and that is a very frightening thing.” How many of the leftists who RTed the "OMG, a right is upset at the Chinese because he thinks they all look the same" disagree?

None of us is stupid enough to think Scruton is stupid enough to think Chinese all look the same. But he's well smart enough to play on the trope. Dogs don't have thumbs, but they can hear whistles.

So a righty says "the Chinese state indoctrinates people" and other righties say "oh, that's bad", but a lefties look at this and say "ok, we're going to ignore both the literal meaning of the words AND what the audience claims to hear, because we know what they REALLY mean" ?
