jailing someone for theft is AUXILIARY to restitution, which is also part of the normal process. The jail is to set incentives that decrease the probability of OTHER people being robbed. I think much of the answer lies in reduced recidivism. Punishing a misbehaving child is intended to educate the moral sense of the child; it’s possible a properly structured justice system should do the same. This is off the cuff though. Not sure how strongly I believe this.
