I've got TWO Aristillus short stories. Kinda wondering if I should set up a Patreon, charge a couple of bucks every time I write a prequel short. https://twitter.com/admrlcrnch/status/1109614295837536256 …

If I set up a Patreon for writing short stories (a couple per year; ABSOLUTE max of 1 per month), would you subscribe? What would you pay / what sounds fair?

2/ That'd earn me about 4 tenths of a cent per page read. 15 page story? 6 cents. 80 such readers? $4 If it takes me 14 hours? 30 cents / hour. This is the problem I'm trying to SOLVE, not a solution to it. https://twitter.com/jayawram/status/1109619727494598656?s=19 …

3/ Writing 15 short stories at 10-15 hours each to make a 180 p collection in 200 hours, nets me a profit of 70% of $2.99 = $2.10. Selling 200 copies of it = $420 = $2/hr. Which, again, is the null hypothesis / problem to be solved.https://twitter.com/JohnTaloni/status/1109634038505984001?s=19 …

4/ Ugh, patreon. On some random help page, and I see some dude with nail polish applying makeup. Might have to roll my own mini patreon app in Rails to avoid supporting globohomo. https://blog.patreon.com/patreon-integrations-features …

5/ OK, tentative numbers suggest that I could pull $100-200 per short story. That puts me at perhaps $15/hr, which is twice what I've made from my writing career ("career") so far. I'm inclined to do this. Also, thinking about avoiding Patreon bc SJW.https://twitter.com/MorlockP/status/1109615495521726464 …

6/ Will write my own Patreon clone in Ruby on Rails. ...because doing a thing that doesn't need to be done and which actively costs me money, and then building the tools to do that thing, even when better alternatives exist, is entirely on brand for me.

2/ Also, I'm not sure you'll make a profit on Patreon (or alternative) but it's worth a try. It could also be useful in keeping the "Aristillus" brand alive while you get breathing space to write the 3rd and 4th books.

well, I just did the math for you. What part of it do you disagree with?
