First, you don’t use guns when you are “threatened”. You use guns when you are facing a very particular kind of threat, one which both permits and requires the use of deadly force.

Gun owners know this in such a way that it is the very core of their gun-owning life. When one has guns, one is constantly aware of the situations in which they may and must be used, constantly aware of the current situation, and constantly aware of their grave responsibility.

Responsible gun owners know that this responsibility doesn’t disappear when they get drunk (etc). Responsible gun owners know that their ability to be responsible in their perceptions, decisions, and actions is impaired when drunk etc.

And so, responsible gun owners think deliberately about their plans for intoxication and consider what those plans imply for the responsible storage, access, and use of their guns for the duration.

My own rule is - if I'm going to be drinking, etc, the guns get put away. BUT. There's going to be at least SOMEONE around who is sober and has suitable judgment and THEY get to decide whether and when the guns come back out.
