if you travelled back in time to the 1980s and showed somebody a videotape of a 2010s movie/show that was set in the 1980s how long do you think it would take them to pick up on the fact that something was odd

This is fascinating. What do you think the "tells" would be? Big things they got wrong or just an accumulation of slightly off details?

A lot of stuff would be slightly off. What I notice most is language: expressions that didn't come along till the 90s or later, but everyone understands them. I think fashion would be like that. Also, CGI.

The thing I really notice in period shows and movies is men/boys calling each other "bitch," which I NEVER heard in the 80s. That was a 90s hip hop thing that went mainstream.

Yeah, the 80s were really the last decade of overall pop culture innocence. Pre-AIDs, pre-internet. Teenagers in movies were actually played by teenagers, not model-perfect early twentysomethings. And the humor was much less cynical.

      AIDS was an 80s thing.

Yeah, but I was thinking it probably wasn't on most people's radar until the mid-ish 80s. I'm just going by memory, but I think the first case in the U.S. was maybe 81? But it definitely changed the decade in ways we tend to forget in 2019.

Also while it was definitely a thing, it was considered pretty confined to the gay community and they mostly didn't want to be integrated in society. Remember that lots of gay organizations opposed marriage equality at first.

Very true. Watching famous people die then learning someone you know was dying. It was awful.
