2/ There's no villain here. The two fundamental issues are that: (a) there are TONS of entertainment options available today: TV, movies, vidya, pr0n, twitter, FB, reading fiction (b) the compensation for writing is part cash and part status.

3/ When authors prove themselves willing - over and over and over again - to work for $5/hr or whatever, in order to be able to say "yes, I wrote that", "yes, I got published", "yes, I won an award", "yes, people read my words", "yes, my ideas are out there!" ... well?

That's all SFF that's been through gatekeepers - that indicates pent up demand for *different* gatekeepers than the ones we have now Now for something to get published it has to be acceptable to bitter cat ladies - no one wants that filter and no one wants unfiltered either
