the problem with a rescue mission is that the turnaround time on orbiters was 6+ months. They did complete tear down on the three main engines, the time to stand up a stack of SRBs and fuel tank was weeks if not months, etc. life support on an orbiter was < 2 weeks IIRC
Yep. NASA is insane. On the one hand, they had massive "black zones" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_abort_modes … with no survivability. On the other hand, they'd polish some turds til they gleamed. No sense of balance to make everything 99.5% safe. Instead some things were 99.99999%, others 50%
