the problem with a rescue mission is that the turnaround time on orbiters was 6+ months. They did complete tear down on the three main engines, the time to stand up a stack of SRBs and fuel tank was weeks if not months, etc. life support on an orbiter was < 2 weeks IIRC

meet up with the ISS depends on orbit. Orbit is VERY easy to pick at launch time, and very very hard to change once up there. ISS has a very high inclination (tilt), higher than most SS mission orbits. Changing inclination prob exceeded delta-V in tanks for OMS
