the problem with a rescue mission is that the turnaround time on orbiters was 6+ months. They did complete tear down on the three main engines, the time to stand up a stack of SRBs and fuel tank was weeks if not months, etc. life support on an orbiter was < 2 weeks IIRC
also, damage to Columbia was on underside. Not sure if the Canadarm could reach under there, if there were cameras, if that missions had MMUs onboard, etc.

I personally get stressed when I have to leave for the airport and don't have redundancy in case the car breaks down. Insane to me that the Shuttle program had phases of launch with zero chances of survivability (previous programs had abort possible all the way through)
