Back in college there'd often be crowds of people walking abreast fully blocking the sidewalk.
When I was approaching them I'd move to the far right of the sidewalk and proceed - but refuse to step off onto the grass.
95% of folks finally stepped aside. >

Heh, that's the way I remember it, too. 6' and shaped like a bear, most people were courteous to me, but those who weren't, walked into a wall. OTOH, by later adulthood reverse-commuting Chicago, people actively got out of my way. Look em in the eye with purpose, and they sheep.
