one essence of modernity is orthogonality, i.e. the ability to decompose things on separate axises and then recombine them in other patterns. This is how AD&D treats race & class. Mixing modernity w fantasy is wrong Basic D&D had it right with elf, etc as class Change my mind

IIRC, the d20 Warcraft setting had the option to take racial levels such as troll and dwarf. 5th level barbarian/3rd level Troll for example.

Within the mechanical strictures of D&D for which stats and abilities exist, Dwarves are only "Fighters" and Elves are only "Magic Elf Knights" because the other crap they might do doesn't require dice and tables and statistics. All other non-adventuring professions use baseline.
