Conversely, an engine like GURPS - where everything (attributes / skills / physical & social handicaps) in commensurable - is the right approach for science fiction, where the tone is one of hyper-modernity, and everything is tradeable / fungible / rationalized

IIRC, the d20 Warcraft setting had the option to take racial levels such as troll and dwarf. 5th level barbarian/3rd level Troll for example.

Classic fantasy such as Tolkien and Moorcock has characters of the same race who have different skills that can't be explained different levels.

I think ad&d still had sufficient restrictions in place so that the system added flavor for very little cost as opposed to latter monstrosities that allowed dwarf paladins, halfling mages and what have you
