The problem with holocaust reparations is like the problem with slavery reparations: * the people who deserve to pay, mostly don't * the people who deserve to receive them, mostly don't It's transferring money from one set of semi-bystanders to different set.https://twitter.com/robinhanson/status/1102666450546900992 …

Anon says: "My family benefited from [German holocaust reparations]. Was it an adequate apology for the Holocaust? Did it even things up? Of course not. But not only did it help directly, it helped us put the experience behind us emotionally, & get on with the rest of our lives"

I worked out some numbers for slavery reparations a bit ago: ~5M slave working-lives stolen (1860 census), 5c/hr wages for unskilled labor, total working life of 50 years is a total appropriation from slaves of ~$37.5B as of 1864.

Compound interest on that at 1.8% from 1864 to 2017 gives a present value of $589B. 74.5m Af-Ams (mostly descended from American slaves) gives $7,905 per. Honestly that seems pretty cheap.

IMO if emancipated slaves had an IOU from... someone, their heirs should be able to inherit that. The real question is if anyone present owes the IOU - you can't inherit debts from your ancestors.

      > their heirs should be able to inherit that that's not the way inheritance works. You can not inherit debt in excess of the assets you inherit. If dad dies with a $5,000 credit card bill and also a $10 bill, you get nothing - no $10, but also not $5,000 debt.

Right, but you're applying it backwards. An IOU that says "you owe me $ for enslaving me" is an *asset*, not a debt. So someone whose great-great-grandfather had an IOU like that can inherit it. The question is if there's anyone alive who actually owes that IOU anymore.

ah, I misread "their heirs" to mean "the heirs of the slaveholders". Right you are.

My bad for being unclear! Means the really interesting cases are institutional slaveholders, where the IOU could have remained intact. There was a recent story about Georgetown U selling slaves down to Louisiana in the 1860s and whether they owe the descendants anything.

yep! I would entirely agree that debts are retained by institutions.
