The salient point is that treating ISIS combatants as if they were from a legitimate nation-state rather than a band of brigands will [reinforce the widespread perception/give the game away] that the west was deliberately supporting ISIS.

I just think everyone has got to the "sick of killing" stage of this conflict. And those prisoners don't want to die in a losing cause. And the soldiers don't want to be the last guy killed in the conflict.
