@random_eddie for the past ~3-4 months when I go to kickstarter and search "RPG in tabletop games", everything is "an RPG 'zine".
1) this is code-word for "small and shitty production values", yes?
2) WTF / how did this happen / from where did this shit happen ?

Huh. "zines" have been a thing forever and yeah, it explicitly means "amateur magazine" for which your gloss is arguably correct. Dunno about "RPG zines" being the new hotness, I'm probably missing out on some kind of trend.

yeah, I know of "zine" from the 70s / 80s ... -> current day xerox context but "RPG zine" is a new phrase that I have only seen for the last 3 months

I shall search it out and learn more, but my blind guess is that it's new and retarded.

Looks like there's some kind of linguistic drift going on here? Kinda like "ashcan" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashcan_copy …

This seems relevant and may be why you're seeing a bunch of these on Kickstarter recently... because Kickstarter recently asked for them. https://creators.kickstarter.com/zine-quest-rpg-zines-2019/ …

I'm amused by this juxtaposition. "They have to have the same crappy production qualities as the ones made by hand forty years ago!" "Here's a professional print-on-demand service that can do it for you!"pic.twitter.com/dXT2zl8FA6

The Kickstarter promo is probably why you've started seeing them on Kickstarter, but they didn't come up with the concept out of nowhere. Looks like there may have been a rise in "rpg zines" that coincides with and is culturally tied to the rise in "OSG" Old School Gaming.

"We're now/once again playing games the way we/they used to way back in day, why not start putting out fan material the way we/they used to do it?" https://rendedpress.blogspot.com/p/old-school-zines.html … (still just speculation on my part, though)

several times in my life I have done a thing with 4x the production values of the competitors, just as a big !@# you to everyone else (e.g. the story about me memorizing a poem in 4th grade, but also the USAF ROTC cadet newsletter, etc.) This rpg zine thing...same.

"Here's my retro-zine." "Wow, it looks just like those old crappy mimeographed ones." "Yeah, I built my own mimeo machine so I could make them." "..." "And I produced my own paper, replicating the lousy pulp they used back then."
