I used to have a weak and unexamined belief that aging inherently confers an ability to face death gracefully. Turns out that’s false.

Yep. The pain diminishes, in time, til eventually you remember that there WAS pain but you can't actually feel it. My advice: there's love in your heart for 2 dogs, and right now half of that is going unused. Puppies cure heart pain. Speaking w authority on this matter.

maybe adopt an older, very calm dog from a rescue org? Older dogs have lots of love to give...and nothing will help your heart like a new dog.
