full red tribe mode: * children shouldn't be allowed to have opinions * government employees have the right and authority to physically assault citizens * so do parents * assault is a good response to differing opinions * compelled speech is good Never go full red tribe.https://twitter.com/e2pilot/status/1097522832630636545 …

If I had acted up in school like that 11 year old, here's how it would have gone down: - I'd get a spanking at school, or some other punishment - When I got home, spanking number 2 - When I got back to school...a full on apology to the teacher for being a brat.

2/ I don't understand how red tribe can (correctly) understand that DMV employees, EPA employees, IRS employees, etc. are midwit careerist government employees, and yet give deference to a SUBSTITUTE TEACHER to slap their own flesh-and-blood. You trust a gov employee that much?

Hypothesis: Red tribe values deference to proper authority based on your relative position in the hierarchy. Child < Teacher, even substitute, so obedience expected. EPA/DMV/IRS are lower in hierarchy, less respect deserved. Not sure why physical violence is so deified.

Physical violence is the manifestation of authority. Only government has a monopoly on force, and insomuch that teachers are government employees, they're allowed that freedom apparently.

True, with that said it is still strange that they'd accept a stranger to use physical violence on children, when they would likely not accept a stranger using physical force against themselves under 'parallel' circumstances. Think there's weird self-justifications going on.

I think the hierarchy argument is correct red-tribe parents think that they have the right to physically punish, and they can delegate that right to others

Aha, THAT would ring true. If they viewed rebellion against teacher's authority as rebellion against parent's authority by proxy, then yeah, they would support responding in kind to 'restore' necessary respect. Teacher is seen as agent.

That would be the most logical reason. If the parent wasn't accepting of this sort of punishment, it would be a shitshow.
