Assimilationist ideas are based on the assumption that people who went to a great deal of effort to emigrate to America want to be Americans.

Assimilation helps people fit in to a new country. If they don't assimilate to some extent, they bring their grievances, feuds, and sometimes barbaric practices to the new country. Assimilation=peace. A hodgepodge of different beliefs, unless leavened by extreme tolerance, =war.
