Magic talking dogs don’t stop being manic talking dogs just because you create them via “genetic engineering” rather than “ritual magic.” Until it actually happens, in which case, like alchemy becoming chemistry, it stops being magical speculation and becomes reality.

“I, Robot” is definitely fantasy, as the existence of hard AI necessitates a fundamental change in the metaphysical nature of reality. “The Hobbit” is ultimately, per its author’s intended revisions, part of an alternate history, which is a subgenre of SF.

There is, and has been since at least the medieval period, proof that intelligence, properly so-called, is substantially immaterial and thus is not capable of being derived through the reorganization of matter (such as patterns on a magnetic disk).

I agree that intelligence may be immaterial and that the soul definitely is. However, it may be that God, perceiving a level of computational power sufficient to create a p-zombie, chooses to imbue it with self awareness. So, in the same way that two parents create a child but

But Asimov’s stories entail a world in which intelligence can be intentionally engineered out of material arrangement. Which entails a tweaking of the metaphysical nature of reality. Which is fantasy.

That makes me wonder about someone writing a sci-fi book with AI where the final proof isn’t some Turing test, but a desire to be baptized.

That's an interesting thought. I've always viewed "AI" as man imitating God. We are made in His image, and as He made people, we make "people". Ours is always a smaller shadow, it's implicit in the arrangement. If God stepped in to give it a soul, the symbolism breaks down.
