Magic talking dogs don’t stop being manic talking dogs just because you create them via “genetic engineering” rather than “ritual magic.” Until it actually happens, in which case, like alchemy becoming chemistry, it stops being magical speculation and becomes reality.

They should just be honest about their categories, and label that shelf "nerd shit". (I think the grouping comes from a preference for "literarary" fiction, and a disdain for both science fiction and fantasy.)

I think going down this path logically requires you to just lump ALL genres under "fiction" or "nonfiction" and call it a day. Scifi and fantasy at least employ different settings and themes. There can be line-blurring.
