Lawyer defended his failure to get me an engagement letter in 5 weeks since he said he would (despite 2 follow ups by me) by saying "we've been very busy; it's not personal" To the contrary; I take this incompetence and lying ("we'll get that out to you today") VERY personally.

That instinct is strong in me. ...but it is countered by the fact that I called several firms, and none of them did zoning / regulatory issues, all recommended this firm. Asked a state legislator friend; he recommended same firm. Not sure what my plan B is here.

Ah. That changes the equation. If the own the zoning law biz in the area, you need them more than they need you. It takes 5 minutes to get the letter out, but if you have nowhere else to go, you're fucked.

So far I'm not calling in the cavalry. I just want to have the cavalry all set up and ready to go. I argued the case at the town level very well, lost 5-0, bc they STILL don't understand the law. Now have a schedule to argue for a rehearing. Will do that myself; just >>

exhausting administrative remedies before the next appeal, which is to the court level, where hopefully there's someone who is willing to place "the law crisply and unambiguously says X" over "but we like the other guy and went to high school with him".

Yep. That's why I've deleted the bits of my next text that quote - ruthlessly and brutally and without pity - the incoherent words of the chair of the zoning board. Not personal. Just arguing that the law is clear.
