2/ But to answer the question: software engineers can make $80k (low-end) to $200k (high-end) and so I'd have to make somewhere in there to CONSIDER lots of writing. If you need $50k or more per book to break even...well, writing doesn't pay like that, except for superstars.

3/ So, there's no plausible scenario where I go full time and crank out 2 novels per year. ...but... If I could make $25/hour (3x my current rate) I could afford to indulge the hobby a bit more (1 book every 2 years, reliably-ish).

4/ Also, background info: I ran my own firm for 14 years and made very little. So I've got a massive hole where my retirement savings should be. Basically $0. And I'm 47. So I need to catch up, massively...which means semi-serious dedication to earning over the next decade.
