“Nationalism has been a recurring facet of civilizations since ancient times, though the modern sense of national political autonomy and self-determination was formalized in the late 18th century.” Not that le Wik is Gospel, but this is basically my understanding as well.

formalized? Sure!
however, let's contrast:
"Nationalism has been a recurring facet of civilizations since ancient times" (my stance)
vs
"Nationalism is a modern creation" (@AlexNowrasteh )
You, I, and Wikipedia all agree w the first once. Alex disagrees w all three of us.

I dunno the guy and kinda don’t care what he thinks tbh. I took “Nationalism is a modern creation” as meaning “was formalized in the late 18th century”, rather than the patently absurd claim that there were no nations or people who wanted self-determination for theirs.

Like I would be genuinely surprised if you could find a quote with “nationALISM”, the word, from the 17th century or earlier.
