4/ Yes, re slate roof longlevity. Yes, re overengineered. I took a week long course on timber framing at Yestermorrow in VT ~20 years ago. All timbers will be massive. Plus, visible copper is a giant beacon for tresspassers out to steal, well, copper. You'll have to sit watch on it and never leave once it's out you've got a copper roof up somewhere.

A properly installed slate roof will easily outlast you. (And I'm confident you'll over-engineer the roof framing / decking, which is NOT a terrible thing with slate roofs.)
