After reading an excerpt from Yoram Hazony's book The Virtue of Nationalism, that actually makes sense. "In taking up arms in the name of their own national state and their own self-determination, the Jews, as many Europeans and others now see it, have simply taken up the same..

The intellectual error there (of which Hazony complains), of course is conflating Nationalism with Empire. The Nazis used small pockets of "Germans" or "Aryans" as an excuse to conquer wide swaths of land. (Ignore most of Poland, France, of course).

The concept that there should be *some* "nation" for "Germans" does not require (a) irredentism; (b) conquest; (c) empire; or (d) killing or even expelling non-Germans from that "nation". Likewise, Zionism (sadly!) doesn't require conquest of the entire Middle East.
