Modest proposal:
Whenever anyone is sentenced to jail, the negotiate with the court. "I will pay $X/year to discharge my prison sentence."
The court has a standing table of prices, based on crime and earning potential.
If you can buy your way out, great.
Else, you serve time

GP Ooooh! A relatively objective system! Still, debtor's prison.

And: if you pay but are convicted of another crime during the period you would otherwise have been in pokey, you serve the "unamortized" portion of the original sentence, forfeiting the payment. Also: are you excluding violent crime? Certain classes - homicide, rape?

Kind of like Finland where speeding ticket fines are based on income. https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/03/finland-home-of-the-103000-speeding-ticket/387484 …

1) May be a difference between violent and non-violent crime with this idea. 2) Would this be abused like civil forfeitures are today? I can imagine a small polity getting greedy on smaller crimes that would be easy to pay for just about anyone, particularly if income-adjusted.

As a libertarian it's something I wrestle with, as far as keeping people prisoner. Of course we have too many crimes for which people are incarcerated. But violent offenders are a problem in any society. I'm not talking about fist-fights, but actual physical attacks, murder, rape
