while it's an argument, i'm not sure i believe it. even gentle correction doesn't seem to do much (see @MorlockP vs alex whatshisface), most people are too invested in what they think.

Yeah, I see this a lot. But I've seen bystanders (which I guess we used to call "readers" back in the days of fisking stuff on blogs) persuaded / educated, too.

yeah - the "fights" over ideas i'm thinking of that persuaded and educated people (bystanders, not the participants) didn't really involve meanness.

if it's directed at the person who holds them, i think you'll just upset them, so in that case, probably yes, but if you're just tweeting-out-loud about some bad idea and calling it bad, that's not mean.
