/ And in parallel with the publishers changing, the actual shape of the market (what was bought, what was printed, what sold) change ... probably largely BECAUSE of the publishers, but also because of a change in the readers. Newer readers came up on SF movies, anime, feminism >

/ The change in the market was both "supply side" and "consumer side". And the polarization and radicalization that we see in politics happened there too. It's...quite weird looking through the shelves at B&N It used to be that maybe 1/4 of the SF authors were female. Now...

/ If you scan 100 non-Baen books on the shelf, it seems like they are 40% female authors, 10% Asian authors, 50% fantasy, 10% not-really-SF-or-F-genre.

/ I've got no problem with female authors, Asian authors, black authors, etc. I could name multiple authors in each category that I like. ...but it's also hard to escape the conclusion that the Powers That Be are counting checkboxes as they do their manuscript purchasingpic.twitter.com/7u2KNvbZtZ

/ Yep! EXACTLY! It's not MERELY that Tor etc have drifted from "left of center" to "hard left", it's that OTHER 1/4 of the market has coalesced hard around Baen. Just as the left has made Scalzi their totem animalpic.twitter.com/TUQPp7bZkX

/ I've met Larry two or three times. I've sat down and eaten dinner with him. He's he most charming and nice and skilled guy you'd ever want to meet. ...but it's bad for a very wide genre to be split into two halves, and to be simplified into two camps and two totems.

/ It's not that there's a single thing wrong with Monster Hunter Novels, and mercenaries shooting Cthulhu like creatures with .50 BMGs. ...and there's a hell of a lot right about it. Just as there's nothing wrong with lesbian girl-power vampire hunter fiction from the left.
