This is a very bad take. Handshakes carry weight, sure ... but what is the AGREEMENT that they affix themselves to? The beauty of a written contract is that it forces both parties to contemplate the EXACT, SAME details ...and then gives an arbiter, later, access to the same. https://twitter.com/Kyle_Moonlight/status/1075119610389774336 …

A handshake is fine when 1. people are honourable, AND 2. everything goes to plan. A good contract is the result of thinking of every way something can go wrong and agreeing what you will do when it does. Of course unexpected things still occur, but you avoid a lot of aggravation

A small but significant part of my work is trying to sort out acrimonious disputes between former friends who didn't think working these things out beforehand was necessary, costing both sides time and money. It's a ballache.

Yeah there are only 2 types of handshake deals I'll accept: 1) preliminary agreements 2) things between friends who are willing to adjust on the fly because there's no real expectation that things will end up being equivalent at the end anyway ("I'll cover gas, you drive)

Speaking of number 2, annual handshake deal with a friend, I buy gas and I get to drive this to cut the back fieldpic.twitter.com/94VnbcWJuF
