I think the critique that he's trying to make is that back in the "old days" you could just research neat stuff and eventually it would pay off, or not. There's something to be said for that approach.

The problem is that we pay non-monetarily, via attention. So, a) ppl only slowly realize the cost (if at all), and b) Google can revoke access to their platform without violating any contract.
