It's all the same to me. I might not read "realist" fantasy, but I'm not reading Shanara shit anyway, so.

I enjoyed the 1st one, although the ending was, uh, suspect at best. I finished the 2nd one because I'm a glutton for punishment. I merely laughed at the existence of the 3rd and every subsequent novel.

Was it Shannara where Not-Gandalf roles up near the beginning to take the protagonist on his quest? Or am I thinking of another Tolkien clone? Or all of them?

Not Gandalf shows up to warn Not Sam & Frodo that they must undertake a quest to destroy Not-Sauron using Not-The One Ring but that they needed to leave Not-the-Shire quick before the Not-Nazguls found them.

But that does not mean...that there is any difficulty in identifying it as a bad book. It is of course a close copy of The Lord of the Rings, in the sense that a paint-by-numbers Mona Lisa is a close copy of Leonardo’s masterpiece. https://bondwine.com/2007/01/22/1977-lord-of-the-rinky-dink/ …

Tom Simon is an excellent critic, with a bit of a blind spot where the pulps are concerned. I hope his health improves so he can continue to grace us with his thought.
